At Great Sankey Primary we believe that Design and Technology develops children's skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials. Children will also develop the life skills and knowledge associated with healthy living, food, nutrition and cookery. It encourages children's creativity and encourages them to think about important issues. It is vital to nurture creativity and innovation through design, and by exploring the designed and made world in which we all live and work. As the children leave us our vision is that they will be provided with opportunities to develop and use these skills in a constantly changing society, which is increasingly dependent on technology. DT is becoming an even more important subject area for future careers as children need to be creative, independent, flexible thinkers who are able to evaluate their own ideas and always want to succeed. These children do not see setbacks as failure but just another step on the learning ladder towards an effective solution.

Intent

It is the intent of Great Sankey Primary that Design Technology is taught in all year groups through at least one topic per term, meaning that each year group covers 3 Design Technolgy topics per year, one of these will relate to food. Where appropriate Design Technolgy topics will be cross curricular.

It is the intent of Great Sankey Primary that our children are prepared to deal with tomorrows rapidly changing world. Design Technology encourages children to become independent, creative problem solvers and thinkers, who are able to work with confidence both individually and as part of a team. We will encourage children to consider their own and others needs, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts. They will be given opportunities to look at past and present design, to reflect upon and evaluate uses and effectiveness. We would like our children to become innovators and risk takers -  not to be afraid of challenges, to not give in, but to persevere and find solutions to problems they encounter.

Implementation

At Great Sankey Primary the teaching of Design Technology follows the National Curriculum through the use of the Design and Technology Associations Projects on a Page.

Through a variety of creative and practical activities, we teach the knowledge, understanding and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of design and making. Children are given projects which have a purpose in mind and an intended user for the product. Food Technology is implemented across the school with children developing an understanding of where food comes from, seasonality of ingredients, and the importance of planning and preparing a healthy varied diet.

Early Years Foundation Stage.

Within our Nursery and Reception classes our children explore and use a variety of media and materials through a combination of child initiated activities and play, and adult directed activities. They express their own ideas using a variety of media and materials, they plan and construct with a purpose in mind. They will develop their skills in using simple tools and techniques safely. They will be introduced to the Food element of DT in preparing a healthy snack.

KS1.

Within KS1 children will design, make and evaluate using a range of relevant contexts. They will be taught the knowledge and skills needed to engage in an iterative process of designing and making. Where possible projects will be cross curricular - for example when looking at toys the children could follow the combining and joining to make puppets for EYFS.

As part of their work with food in KS1 children need to understand where food comes from, and how to prepare and cook a healthy dish.

KS2

Within KS2 children will build upon the knowledge and skills taught in KS1. They will be expected to produce more detailed planning and annotated sketches. They will investigate and analyse existing products, and within KS2 there is more emphasis on looking at events and designers who have influenced the world of Design Technology.

Within KS2 children should be introduced to computer programmes and applications which will help in the design of products.

They will build on their understanding of a healthy and varied diet, looking at seasonality and different cooking techniques.

As well as children following the Projects on a page for Design Technology, there are also other opportunities where DT plays a key role - for example in STEM week, and recently in our Christmas Enterprise week, where there was some super design activities.

Impact

Assessment of children's learning in Design Technology is  ongoing, teachers are able to make assessments according to the expectations as to where children's understanding, knowledge and skills are when observed in lessons. This will enable them to intervene, support, challenge or provide differentiation as necessary.

Design Technology is also monitored by the Subject leader throughout the year through talking to class teachers, observing lessons, book monitoring and pupil voice.
